Beijing Olympics 2022 Mascot - Panda Bing Dwen Dwen

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Mascot Bing Dwen DwenBing Dwen Dwen

China is the home of pandas, which lend themselves adorably to mascot use. To reflect this Olympic Games being in winter, the mascot for Beijing 2022 has been designed as a panda clothed in a suit of ice, inspired by the Chinese candied haws - crispy sugar-coated fruit (haws, yam, etc.) on a stick.

What's the Olympic Panda represent?

The cute name for this fluffy panda is Bing Dwen Dwen (冰墩墩 Bīng Dūndūn /bing-dwnn-dwnn/). "Bing" means 'ice', and "Dwen Dwen" (literally 'block block') means robust, lovely, and lively, like a child next door, in Chinese.

How popular is the Panda Bing Dwen Dwen in China?

The Panda Bing Dwen Dwen should be so far the biggest star of the Beijing Olympics 2022.

Just a few days after the Beijing Olympics 2022 took place, this chubby panda mascot was already out of stock. Fans are waiting in lines for hours or even overnight in cold weather to purchase one.

Manufacturers have already mobilized workers to end their Chinese New Year holiday earlier, to produce the panda mascot, and to ensure every fan has one as soon as possible.

If you are a fan of Bing Dwen Dwen, please just wait to get one.

Bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics

In 2013, Kraków (Poland), Lviv (Ukraine), Stockholm (Sweden), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Oslo (Norway), and Beijing (China) submitted their applications to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

In July of 2014, three cities including Almaty, Oslo, and Beijing moved to the candidate phase.

In October of 2014, Oslo withdrew its application due to its lack of political support, leaving Almaty and Beijing as the final candidates.

On July 31 of 2015, beating Almaty by 4 votes, Beijing was selected to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Emblem

Inspired by the Chinese character "冬" (dōng 'winter'), the emblem of Beijing 2022 was designed using an artistic rendering of Chinese calligraphy and named 'Winter Dream'

The flowing ribbon-like motif resembles a skater in its upper part and a skier in its lower part. The color of the emblem is mainly blue, representing dreams, the future, and the purity of ice and snow. The other two colors are red and yellow, which are the colors of China's national flag, represent the passion, youth, and vitality of the Olympics.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Torch

The torch for Beijing 2022, named 'Flying Raising' (飞扬 Fēiyáng /fay-yang/), features a similar design to the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics in order to honor Beijing as the first city to host both a summer Olympics and a winter Olympics.

The design of the torch is full of Chinese tradition. The colors of the torch are silver and red, with patterns of 'lucky clouds' (祥云 Xiángyún /sshyang-ywnn/) and paper-cut snowflakes from the bottom up to the flame.

The flame part is designed as two overlapping fluttering ribbons. Two torches can be closely interlocked when exchanging the flame.
